Keto Orange Chicken Recipe Wide

I have seen some people online posting about what they eat at Panda Express, which usually includes steamed vegetables and their teriyaki chicken without sauce. That might count as a keto-friendly meal, but it sure won’t curb any cravings for that sweet and spicy Orange Chicken that they have made world famous. We spent some time in the kitchen using some familiar ingredients to produce a sauce that was not only Keto-Friendly, but it’s also low calorie too.

We have been making this sauce to put on chicken wings, so if you love chicken wings as much as we do, we highly recommend you give that a shot too! It’s got just the right amount of sweet, just the right amount of spice, and a great mix of ginger and garlic flavors too. After eating this on wings, I finally had to dig into how to make this as a dish that could be eaten with chopsticks, and looked more like the restaurant presentation. Enjoy this served over some Keto Fried Cauliflower Rice, Cooked Asian Veggies, or on its own.

KETO ORANGE CHICKEN RECIPE

Orange Chicken Nutrition Label

Ingredients:

[SAUCE] <- You’re gonna want to write this sauce down or bookmark it so you can make this again!

[CHICKEN]

  • 2 Pounds Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs Cut Into Strips or Pieces
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 1 & 1/2 Cup Whey Protein Isolate (unflavored)

Instructions:

[SAUCE]

  1. In a bowl or Food Processor combine all of the ingredients and blend until fully mixed, and then set aside. (That’s Easy!)
    1. If you don’t have a food processor you can use a hand mixer or a whisk.

[CHICKEN]

  1. Cut the chicken into 1 Inch wide strips or into smaller chunks depending on how you like your Orange Chicken Pieces. Alternatively you can also make this recipe with Chicken Breasts or Tenders too.
  2. Put the Chicken into a Medium Bowl and crack the 2 Large Eggs on top and mix the chicken together with the egg.
  3. In a Frying Pan on the stove, bring your preferred cooking oil up to 290*F. You can use Olive Oil, Avocado Oil, or even Lard.
  4. When the oil is hot and ready, take the chicken pieces One by One and start coating them in the Whey Protein Isolate. Put them into the hot oil and allow to cook approximately 3 minutes per side.
  5. As pieces come out cooked, set them on the side on top of a wire rack, or start eating right away.
  6. When ready to eat, toss the fried chicken in a bowl with the sauce until evenly mixed.

  1. Besides the fact that, Who doesn’t love orange chicken .
This recipe looks fast and easy , and sounds like it will be fabulous. I will be checking it out as soon as I can get a little unflavored protein isolate.
    Thank you .

    1. Susan, I hope you enjoy as much as we did! If you make Chicken Wings at home, try it on wings too!

  2. So, I read that, on the Keto plan, stay away from “processed” foods. These Walden Farms products say “Sugar Free” but they all have cellulose and sucralose in them. Sucralose is just a super-processed form of sugar. It may be way down on the glycemic table but it is processed with chemicals. I also read on a few “expert” Keto sites to stay away from ANY ingredient with “ose” at the end of the name.

    1. There are varying degrees of Keto out there, some more extreme than others for sure. Everyone is welcome to adhere to the guidance that they see the best results from. No harm in that.

  3. Can I use almond or coconut flour if I don’t have the unflavored whey protein isolate?

    1. I was wondering the same thing. Dairy stalls my weight loss.

    2. Is there an answer for the almond flour or any other type of flour rice or coconut?

      1. Sounds like an awesome recipe but I like you can you use almond flour or coconut flour???

        1. I’m sure you could. I would probably go with coconut over almond if I were substituting.

  4. Couple questions! Do you warm the sauce at any point or just sit at room temp til it’s on the chicken?
This is on my meal plan for next Thursday dinner & Friday lunch. Did you have any leftovers? And how did they reheat?
Can’t wait to try! We’re experimenting with all kinds of Keto Asian recipes this month.

    1. Personally I just leave it at room temperature, but you could warm it up if you wanted to (just try not to actually COOK it).

If you plan on left overs, don’t toss them in the sauce until just before you plan to eat them. That way you dont sog up your breading on the leftover chicken.

  5. What is in liquid amino’s and what does it do for the recipe? Where do you find it?

    1. Liquid Aminos are an alternative to Soy Sauce. Other people will use Coconut Aminos as a further alternative to that. Either way they just give a little Soy Sauce flavor to the meal. The brand I used is sold at almost all grocery stores in the US, including at Wal Mart. If you are looking for coconut aminos instead you can find those at most places too.

  6. I ‘m totally convinced that the Whey Powder is the way to fry! This turned out so good! Didn’t lose any of the batter while frying and it was so crispy… Highly recommend this recipe and the sauce is to die for❤️

    1. It’s a great substitution in texture for those foods that are fried in corn starch normally.

  7. I’m having trouble finding Walden Farms Calorie Free Marmalade. I’ve tried Traget, Walmart, Cub Foods…any suggestions?

    1. Do you have a Sprouts, Whole Foods or similar near you?

  8. OMG! What a dinner tonight we had with this Orange Chicken recipe. I finally found a KETO recipe that my daughters really liked. They cleaned their plates with this one. I am definitely in agreement that Whey Protein Powder is the way to fry. The chicken came out looking amazing and the sauce was perfect — not overly organgy, but very balanced. Thank you. I can’t wait to try other recipes.

    1. Glad to hear you like it too Allen! It may take a little bit of work to make the dish, but there’s probably no substitute that would taste quite this good.

  9. I made this tonight and it is delicious!!! I didn’t have Whey powder so used 2 T of peanut flour and 2 T of sesame flour to “bread ” the egg dipped chicken. It is fabulous!!!!

  10. did not care for the Walden farms products. especially the marmalade
    .

    1. Eating the Marmalade on its own is not a great flavor. I only use that in this mixture, because the flavor on its own is not so good.

  11. One of my dearest friends is Chinese and she taught me to make a spicy orange chicken dish by simply marinating the chicken in soy sauce, then quickly stir frying. I made this recipe the same way, subbing liquid aminos for the soy sauce, and skipped the coating and deep frying step. It was easy to make and worked quite well in this recipe which is delicious!

  12. What is the vegetable mixture underneath the orange chicken and is it picked or just steamed?

    1. That was some steamed broccoli, red bell peppers, green beens, and mushrooms.

  13. Anything I can substitute with if I can’t find those dressings?

    1. it will be hard to substitiute any of these ingredients as orange or orange marmalade aren’t considered keto friendly. I’d try orange extract, maybe even soaking some grated zucchini, or even citris vodka! and xanthum gum to thicken it or maybe a small amount of actual orange juice from the actual fruit?

  14. Can you make these in the oven?

  15. Do you have a printable version of your recipes?

    1. Yes, there is a PRINT icon near the top of every recipe page.

  16. What else can I use besides Whey powder, can I use Almond flour

    1. Almond Flour will not coat it the same way as Isolated Whey Protein
